Prestigious Award Recognizes the 26 Most Innovative Young Companies from Around the Globe

Company Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud Will Accept Award at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Switzerland in January 2010

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – December 3, 2009Boston-Power®, Inc., the rapidly growing provider of next-generation lithium-ion batteries, today announced it has been named a 2010 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum. The only energy storage company to earn this distinction, company founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud will join top executives from Twitter, Aura Biosciences, eSolar, Proteon Therapeutics, Serious Materials and other fellow recipients at the 2010 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland in January, where they will be lauded for providing market-changing products in the fields of cleantech, health and information technologies.

The prestigious Technology Pioneer award recognizes the most innovative start-ups from around the world that will have a critical impact on the future of business and society. Winners from prior years include such widely respected companies as Silver Spring Networks, Gridpoint, Phase Forward, Wikimedia Foundation and Mozilla. A video in which Dr. Lampe-Önnerud discusses Boston-Power’s approach to innovation, taken on the occasion of Boston-Power’s recognition as a Technology Pioneer, is available on YouTube and can be seen here.

The identification of the Technology Pioneers is the result of a vigorous selection process for which the Forum received hundreds of applications from around the world, evaluated by 58 global technology experts. Boston-Power’s accomplishments were recognized among a distinguished field of applicants, which included a substantial increase in the number of cleantech and energy-related companies in particular applying for the award this year.

“We are building a company to make a difference, and we’re proud of the progress we’ve made toward that goal indicated by the prestigious Technology Pioneer award,” said Dr. Lampe-Önnerud. “We are also proud to share the recognition with the 25 other visionary companies receiving this honor this year. Boston-Power’s staff, customers, investors and partners remain dedicated to energy storage innovation that redefines what is possible in portable power – while demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.”

“Entrepreneurship, innovation and technology have always played a key role in shaping and improving society. This proves to be even more the case during times of crisis, similar to the one the world faced this past year during the biggest recession in almost a century. New companies are already planting the seeds of recovery and the next wave of growth and progress,” said André Schneider, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Economic Forum.

With more than 100 patents pending, Boston-Power’s advances in the area of energy storage have earned the company worldwide recognition. Proving that a commitment to environmental sustainability can complement sought-after, competitively differentiated products and world-class mass manufacturing, the company counts HP among its customers – making it the first U.S.-based firm ever to provide battery technology to a global notebook PC vendor. Boston-Power is the first and only battery provider whose rechargeable lithium-ion battery cells have earned the prestigious Nordic Ecolabel accreditation. The company’s products have also earned a similar industry-first certification from the China Environmental United Certification Center (CEC). In addition to notebook computers, Boston-Power’s products support a range of end applications, from consumer electronics and smart grid to Plug-In Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (PHEV/BEV).
