A company called Boston-Power will provide lithium ion batteries for Project M, a project being developed by the Johnson Space Center in Houston to land a humanoid robot on the lunar surface, dubbed Robonaut 2 or R2. “The Westborough-based company said it would deliver a 2.5-kilowatt energy storage system, which includes the company’s Swing battery system, as well as an integrated battery management system.”
Project M, which has yet to be officially approved, has been testing a number of systems at JSC that would comprise the lunar mission, including a version of R2 with a head, legs, and arms that would traverse the lunar surface, a lunar lander being developed by Armadillo Aerospace, and other cutting edge technologies. “The packs will be tested at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, for possible integration into an advanced space vehicle as part of the Lunar Lander project, Boston-Power said.”
Project M is yet to be officially approved, but considerable work is being undertaken on it never the less.
