Boston-Power Captures Spot Among 100 Most Promising Companies Driving the Future of Technology

Red Herring Recognition Adds Another Prestigious Endorsement to Lithium-ion Battery Startup’s List of Industry Recognition and Awards

Westborough, Mass. – May 14, 2008 – Boston-Power, Inc., a rapidly growing provider of first-to-market portable power solutions, today announced that it has been named to the Red Herring North America 100 list for 2008. Boston-Power joins previous winners that include Google, Yahoo!, Skype, Netscape, Salesforce.com, and YouTube.

Bestowed annually for more than a decade, the much-coveted Red Herring award honors the top 100 private technology companies that exemplify game-changing technology in key markets. In order to identify the 100 best companies, the Red Herring editorial team diligently surveys hundreds of technology firms from around the country. Evaluation includes careful analysis of financial data as well as subjective criteria such as quality of the management team, execution of corporate and product strategy, and dedication to research and development.

“Along with the world’s top notebook computer providers, Boston-Power is addressing the top complaint mobile users have – poorly performing battery power,” said Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, Founder and CEO of Boston-Power. “Earning a place on the Red Herring 100 is a tremendous endorsement of our strategy and technology. We’re honored to be named to such an impressive list.”

Boston-Power's Sonata redefines the portable power space by establishing new benchmarks in safety, cycle life, performance and environmental sustainability. Initially targeting notebook computers, Sonata delivers the longest cycle life ever available from any Lithium-ion battery. That translates to longer and more usable power – like-new performance for three years versus current batteries that start to fade in only three to six months. Sonata's "drop-in" design enables it to be used with existing notebook computers, requiring no design changes on the part of notebook computer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Highlighting its momentum, Boston-Power recently announced $45 million in Series C funding, bringing total investment in the company to $70 million. The round was one of the biggest venture investments for the year in energy storage and among the top 10 largest investments overall in New England in 2007. In January, Boston-Power also announced expansion of its mass production capabilities through a strategic relationship with GP Batteries, the number one battery manufacturer in Asia outside Japan and the top consumer battery manufacturer in Greater China.

Championing the role that better energy storage must play in combating climate change and preserving the environment, Boston-Power’s Lampe-Onnerud this year has been among US and European delegations meeting with high ranking Chinese officials on a range of business and environmental matters. Next month, she will travel to Oslo, where she will be 1 of just 100 dignitaries and business executives worldwide advising on similar technology- and finance-related policy initiatives.

Boston-Power, Inc.
Boston-Power is set to become a forceful contender in the secondary lithium battery market. The company, founded in 2005, has recently introduced a truly innovative battery system overhaul for lithium-ion batteries used in portable electronic devices. For these reasons, Boston-Power is granted the prestigious 2007 Frost & Sullivan Lithium Battery Technology Innovation of the Year Award. Click here to go to the Frost & Sullivan Hall of Fame.

Background
Founded in 2005, Boston-Power set out to address certain key lithium-ion battery challenges present and currently still affecting the market. These challenges include safety, battery longevity, performance optimization, and cost-effectiveness. The company is headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts, and has a Six-Sigma manufacturing facility in Shenzhen, China. Additionally, Boston-Power has secured a very strong IP portfolio containing multiple patents (granted and pending), and over $23 million in funding and backing from Venrock Associates, Gabriel Venture Partners, Granite Global Ventures, and individual investors.

Boston-Power employs a unique strategy by employing a whole-system approach to battery innovation. This strategy enables the company to dramatically redesign, manufacture, and integrate lithium-ion batteries in the safest and most cost effective manner with today’s portable electronic devices. The result: Boston-Power can offer a significantly better way to build batteries.

Whole-System Approach
Boston-Power’s whole-system strategy reflects a 3-prong approach to creating and delivering a better battery system:

  • Design the battery with safety as a key focus
  • Optimize for cost-effectiveness and performance
  • Provide innovation for lithium-ion batteries – including improvements on the chemistry, manufacturing processes, design and overall business model

Technology Specifications
The first product Boston-Power has introduced is the Sonata battery line, designed specifically for the notebook computer market. Key specifications of the Sonata product line include:

Improvement -

  • Battery pack to operate at ‘new-battery’ stage for at least 3 years

User Benefit -

  • This addresses one of the key challenges to today’s notebook computer batteries – battery longevity. Users often must replace the battery pack well before the notebook computer end of lifespan. Additionally, traditional lithium-ion battery packs degrade quickly before reaching the three year mark, affecting the notebook computer runtime before recharging is required. Boston-Power’s lithium-ion battery pack offers optimal performance levels for three years, without battery degradation.

Improvement –

  • Faster recharge time

Boston Power, Inc.
User Benefit -

  • Traditional lithium-ion battery packs for notebook computers take over an hour to reach 80% state of charge capacity. Boston-Power’s innovative lithium-ion battery Sonata can reach 80% SOC in 30 minutes. For today’s mobile workforce and society, minimizing recharge times offers a key benefit as it results in less time ‘tethered’ to the AC power outlet.

Improvement –

  • Multi-layer safety features built into the Sonata battery pack

User Benefit –

  • With the recent battery recalls of millions of notebook computer lithium-ion battery packs, safety is not to be taken lightly. The lithium-ion chemistry is by nature more volatile than other rechargeable battery systems. By redesigning the lithium-ion battery system via a whole system approach, Boston-Power has integrated many additional safety layers that are proprietary to its system. This offers notebook computer OEMs an inherently safer, yet powerful, battery system.

A sampling of the safety features includes the following:

  • Use of new thermal fuses
  • Slower chemical kinetics
  • Novel current interrupt devices
  • Unique pressure relief vents
  • Safer pack configuration

Benefit of the Boston-Power Sonata Pack
Boston-Power is addressing the market’s key issues and challenges with regard to notebook computer batteries as an initial entry into the secondary lithium battery market. There currently is a high priority demand and requirement for safety improvements and overall battery system improvement to power today’s constantly evolving notebook computers. Other key features of the Sonata pack include:

  • Drop-in capability to retrofit or be used with current notebook computer designs
  • Ease of OEM adoption with no need to redesign computer
  • Environmental friendliness, reflected by being the only Lithium-ion battery provider worldwide to earn the prestigious Ecolabel certification

The Sonata battery product line is the first of many product lines Boston-Power expects to introduce.

Boston-Power and HP Strategic Partnership
Underscoring the significance of Boston-Power’s technology, HP has been working closely with the company for more than two years in the testing and validation process of the Sonata product technology. HP’s standing as the world’s top market share holder in notebook computers makes it an especially strong ally for Boston-Power. In addition to HP, essentially all other notebook computer OEMs, as well as a range of portable electronics device manufacturers, are expressing interest in or evaluating Boston-Power’s next-generation Lithium-ion battery technology.

Boston Power, Inc.
Conclusion
As the next generation lithium battery, Boston-Power’s lithium-ion battery technology has the potential to open many application opportunities and solve current battery capacity demands. By combining more power with intrinsically better safety, longer cycle life and a commitment to environmental responsibility, Boston-Power’s lithium-ion battery can provide portable electronic device OEMs with a premium battery product that pairs safety with optimal performance. Conventional lithium-ion batteries have many superior characteristics such as more power density than a standard NiCD battery, light weight, small form factor, low maintenance, rapid charging capabilities, and no memory effect. However, the volatile lithium-ion battery can face performance issues.

Boston-Power is focused on improving lithium-ion battery packs by addressing a whole systems approach to design innovation. This can ultimately aid the portable electronic device marketplaces to adopt a more innovative battery technology than is currently being utilized. For these reasons, Boston-Power is a worthy recipient of the Frost & Sullivan 2007 Lithium Battery Technology Innovation of the Year Award.
