Boston-Power on climate change

Open letter from Boston-Power CEO & Founder, Christina Lampe-Onnerud on Boston-Power's commitment to environmental issues in conjunction with her participation in the recent Climate Control 2008 (CC8) and U.N. Sustainable Consumption conferences:

I am thankful for the opportunity to participate in the discussion on global climate change. To me as a scientist, I am happy to see more specificity in the discussion... the introduction of kWh and real focus on energy storage in combination with solar and wind power are good examples, but also the fact that we reached consensus that the post-Kyoto protocol needs effective and well defined goals worldwide. As a business leader, I appreciate both the difficulty in lowering costs to developing countries and the need to share new innovation equitably worldwide. Interest from the media and government recognition of technological innovation and ethical leadership will help inspire people and companies to find ways to accomplish this.

I feel a great deal of responsibility to help facilitate reductions in emissions and pollution so that we reach sustainability ... and I want to continue to help create both public awareness and new solutions before it is too late. I know there is a path to profitable sustainable development!

More details on how the recent CC8 conference impacts you

Under the guidance of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) world leaders are coming together in preparation of the Post Kyoto protocol in Copenhagen 2009. This recent CC8-meeting was charged with giving the UNFCCC recommendations on how to use technology to halt the increasing threat of climate change.

The CC8 meeting included 100 hand-picked delegates from the Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Norway, Senegal, Spain, Sweden UK, and USA, and was designed to bring their insights into the discussion on provisions needed for a successful post-2012 climate agreement. CC8 delegates brought a diverse mix of experience since the group consisted of:

  • Former Prime Ministers/Presidents
  • Ministers of Environment, Science, Technology, and Finance
  • Executives from the World Economic Forum, World Bank, WWF and U.N.
  • Prominent thought leaders and academics from international Universities and Institutes,
  • CEOs of established and new high-tech/energy companies (Google, BP, Boston-Power, and others)
  • From its inception, Boston-Power has been a data-driven company that gives both high performance and sustainable development priority. Today we believe there are alternative energy innovations available that can help solve climate change problems and we are ready to assist. Our Sonata battery technology is one potential near term solution and our technologists are working daily to find new sustainable development applications for it.

It is in recognition of Boston-Power's work for the environment and our reputation as a world-authority on battery power and power systems that Christina was invited to participate in shaping world legislation where it was being formulated. Specifically, she was able to participate in discussions that contributed greater specificity in terms of goals and measures for greenhouse gas emissions.
