WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – June 17, 2009 – Boston-Power, Inc, the rapidly growing provider of next-generation lithium-ion batteries, today announced that company Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud has received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2009 Award in the clean tech category for the New England region. This prestigious distinction recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses. Selected by an independent panel of judges, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud accepted the award at last night’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® gala. “We are proud to recognize the achievements of Dr. Lampe-Onnerud,” said Kristin Keating, Ernst & Young LLP Entrepreneur Of The Year Program Co-Chair for New England. “Winners of the Entrepreneur Of The Year award build leading businesses and contribute significantly to the strength of our region’s economy. Their success helps our area grow stronger.”
“I am humbled and thankful to be receiving this award in the presence of a remarkably impressive group of innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Lampe-Onnerud. “Boston-Power’s success would not have been achieved without the determination and dedication of our entire team as well as our customers and partners. It is on their behalf that I gratefully accept this honor.”
A well-known figure in the battery industry, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud has been awarded 15 patents in portable power solutions, with six patents pending. She has also received a range of industry awards which include: MIT Technology Review’s 100 Top Young Innovators, a Stevie Award for Women in Business as Best Entrepreneur, Mass High Tech’s Women to Watch award and inclusion in the Top Innovators of 2008 list by EDN Magazine. Additionally, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud is a frequently sought-after speaker who passionately and eloquently shares her insights about battery technology, climate change and environmental sustainability at industry and government events around the world.
One of the world’s most closely watched portable power companies, Boston-Power in March ‘09 became the first U.S.-based firm ever to provide battery technology to a global notebook PC vendor. The result of a three-year relationship with HP, Boston-Power’s Sonata battery cells serve as the foundation for a new ‘green’ battery HP has branded the Enviro Series of Notebook Batteries. This marks the first time HP has created a brand around battery technology.
Notably, earlier this month Boston-Power announced plans to build one of the world’s most advanced battery manufacturing facilities in Auburn, Massachusetts. The company also unveiled its second product line, Swing™, for Plug-in Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (PHEV/BEV). The only eco-certified lithium-ion battery of its kind, Swing is poised to drive the adoption of PHEVs and BEVs by establishing new benchmarks in energy density, long life, safety, weight, cost and environmental sustainability.
As a New England award winner, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud will now be among the world-class executives considered for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009 national awards to be announced on November 14, 2009, at an awards gala in Palm Springs, California. The awards are the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, among the nation’s most prestigious gatherings of high-growth, market-leading companies.
