Alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar, are now coming online. However, energy generation from these renewable technologies depends on variable ambient conditions (e.g. sunshine and wind intensity) and must be paired with a reliable source of stored energy to provide power that can reliably match grid demand. Boston-Power’s high energy density lithium-ion battery solutions enable cost-effective, efficient energy storage from these renewable sources.
Utilities are evaluating energy storage at various scales (grid level, sub-station and residential) for several purposes including time and load shifting (peak shaving), frequency control, and grid backup. The benefits include improved power quality and reliability, and the deferral of capital expenditures for capacity expansion. The expanded use of wind and solar, along with better utilization of overnight power generation, will reduce the carbon footprint of electricity generation. One application currently under development is Community Energy Storage (CES) where multiple 25-75 kWh battery energy storage units are connected to utility transformers for load leveling and peak shaving solutions at the sub-station level.
By combining its high energy density, modular, and long cycle life solutions with advanced battery management capabilities, Boston-Power is able to deliver adaptive, reliable, and scalable energy storage platforms that meet the requirements of next generation utility energy storage applications.
